Our RDR Charities
For 2017 we have two charities: The Mulherin Home & Together We Rise
The Mulherin Custodial Home is a 501(c) (3) organization, and a United Way agency. Founded in 1952 in Mobile County by the late Dr. Hugh Mulherin. They are licensed by the State of Alabama Department of Public Health, meeting all life and safety codes, but receive no State or Federal funding.
A message from Butters, one of our GCH3 Hashers who works for this great facility:
Our residents love life and we want to make sure they get the opportunity to live theirs to the fullest potential. About half of our residents attend day programs and all of them enjoy field trips to the movies, baseball games, shopping trips, summer camp, bowling, swimming and more.
The most important fact about Mulherin Home is that we are a family, and for several of our residents, it is the only family they have ever known. The residents all function just as siblings do and the staff takes their place as mothers, sisters and aunts. This is so important for residents like Lenny and Brian.
Lenny, now 48, came to Mulherin Home when he was four years old. His family decided they could not handle a child with Down Syndrome so they brought him to live with us at Mulherin. His family would visit him every few years and call periodically but all communication stopped about ten years ago. Lenny loves Alabama football, 80’s and 90’s music, and looks forward to a cold beer on the holidays.
Lenny's roommate, Brian (56), has a similar story. Brian was brought to Mulherin Home at the age of four, his parents dropped him off and never came back. Brian loves to paint, play the drums and help out with yard work. He bowls with Lenny on a special needs bowling team and attends a day program at MARC.
If not for Mulherin Home, neither Lenny nor Brian would have a place to go. Though both are high functioning they would not qualify to live in a group home and neither of them have any financial support to pay room & board fees. Mulherin is forced to pay for their care out of pocket but for us there is no other option. Lenny and Brian are a part of our family and always will be, therefor we must rely on private donations and community support in order to continue the care all of our residents deserve.
When we asked Butters to write something up for Mulherin Home, we had no idea how touching it would be. This home needs our support Hashers. We are a strong community who can make a huge difference in the lives of the residents at this facility.
Together We Rise is a non-profit organization that is attempting to supply foster children with essential items that most of us take for granted.
Below is a snippet take from their website:
Together We Rise is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of motivated young adults and former foster youth. Our vision is to improve the lives of foster children in America, who often find themselves forgotten and neglected by the public. We collaborate with community partners to bring resources to foster youth and use service-learning activities to educate volunteers on issues surrounding the foster care system.
TWR works with hundreds of foster agencies, social workers, CASA advocates, and other partners to bring our programs to foster youth across the nation. Our foundation has allowed us to provide thousands of foster youth across the country with new bicycles, college supplies, and suitcases so that children do not have to travel from home to home with their belongings in a trash bag.
What they are saying is too true, and it's about time us hashers helped them out. If you would like to learn more about Together We Rise, visit their website at https://www.togetherwerise.org.
